Sending Money To Japan Successfully

  1. Why did my transfer to Japan fail?

Japanese banks have stricter validation requirements than many other countries. If your recipient's banking information doesn't exactly match the bank's records or bankbook (通帳 ツウチョウ), your transfer may be rejected.

Some of the most common reasons include:

    • Using an English version of the recipient's name instead of the registered Katakana name
      Entering an incorrect account number
    • Selecting the wrong account type
    • Entering the wrong bank or branch information
    • Using information from memory instead of confirming it with your recipient

Even small differences may prevent your transfer from being processed.

Before trying again, ask your recipient to verify their banking details directly from their bankbook or online banking website or app.

  2. What information should I confirm with my recipient before sending money to Japan?

Before submitting your transfer, ask your recipient to confirm the following details:

    Information What to Confirm
Full Account Name Exactly as registered with the bank (usually in Katakana)
    Account Number Usually 7 digits
Account Type 普通 (Futsuu), 貯蓄 (Chochiku), or 当座 (Touza)
Bank Name As shown in the bankbook or banking app
Branch Name or Branch Code As shown in the bankbook or banking app

Always use the information exactly as your recipient provides it.

  3. Does my recipient's account name need to be in Katakana?

For many Japanese bank accounts, yes.

The individual’s account name should match exactly how it is written on the recipient's bankbook. If the registered account name is in Katakana, use the Katakana version instead of an English or translated name.

    When making payments to individuals,

Enter the surname and given name in katakana characters, separated by a space.

Example: For "わいず太郎", input "ワイズ□タロウ" (where "□" represents a space).

When making payments to business or corporate accounts,

Enter the type of business, the business name, and the branch name, each separated by a space.

Example: For "株式会社ワイズペイメンツジャパン東京支店", input "カ)ワイズペイメンツジヤパン□トウキヨウシテン (where "□" represents a space)"

    Corporate names abbreviations:

    • At the Beginning:
      • "株式会社" becomes "カ)"
      • Example: "株式会社ワイズペイメンツジャパン" → "カ)ワイズペイメンツジヤパン"
    • In the Middle:
      • "株式会社" becomes "(カ)"
      • Example: "ワイズペイメンツジャパン株式会社東京営業所" → "ワイズペイメンツジヤパン(カ)トウキヨウ(エイ"
    • At the End:
      • "株式会社" becomes "(カ"
      • Example: "ワイズペイメンツジャパン株式会社" → "ワイズペイメンツジヤパン(カ"

Tip: Depending on the bank, the list of abbreviations may differ. Refer to the recipient bank’s official website and guidelines.

  4. Where can my recipient find their banking information?

Your recipient can usually find their banking information in their:

    • Bankbook
    • Online banking app
    • Official bank statements

If they're unable to locate any of the required details, ask your recipient to contact their bank before you try sending again.

  5. What account type should I select?

Ask your recipient to confirm which account type is registered with their bank.

    Japanese English
    普通 (Futsuu) Current / General
    貯蓄 (Chochiku) Savings
    当座 (Touza) Checking
  6. Can I try sending my transfer again?

Yes. Once you've confirmed your recipient's banking information, you can submit your transfer again using GoTyme Bank's Send Money Abroad feature.

Before sending, make sure you've confirmed:

    • Full account name
    • Account number
