Keeping your account safe

Protect your bank account from suspicious activities

1. Securing Your Account Keep your log-in credentials safe.

  • Do not share them with anyone.
  • Use a strong password combination.
  • Use different passcodes or passwords for different mobile app bank accounts.
  • Avoid using birthdays or anniversaries as basis for your passcodes or passwords.
  • Use two-factor authentication if available.

2. Accessing Your Account in Public

  • Do not use unsecured Wi-Fi networks for banking, purchases or checking your emails. Don’t use hotspot in a public place, and instead use your 3G or 4G internet connection.
  • Be aware of shoulder surfers. Be extra careful while typing confidential information such as your account details and password on your mobile in public places.
  • Never leave your mobile phone unattended or stored in an insecure place.
  • Check your device’s security settings to ensure maximum protection. Keep your mobile's operating system and applications, including the browser, updated with the latest security patches and upgrades.
  • Make sure your smartphone or tablet is always protected with a PIN. Do not reveal this PIN to anybody or write it or store it anywhere.
  • Always logout when you’re not using your device.

3. For online shopping, use only official apps or validate URLs.

4. When dealing with informal sellers, request ID, verify bank account names, and be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true.

5. If by any case you fall victim to any suspicious activity:

  • Call your bank as soon as possible to report the case.

Beware of Phishing Scams

Common types of online phishing include:

a. Email Phishing: Malicious emails with harmful links or attachments. Always verify the sender's email address.

b. SMS Phishing (Smishing): Fake text messages with links to phishing sites.

c. Voice Phishing (Vishing): Calls impersonating officials to steal sensitive information.

d. Spear Phishing: Targeted emails aimed at specific organizations to breach internal networks.

Be vigilant about SIM swap scams

SIM swap scam happens when the scammer uses social engineering to collect your personal information and then contacts your cellphone network provider or you to offer a "SIM upgrade." Once they transfer your number to a new SIM, they gain access to your calls and messages, allowing them to intercept OTPs and access your online accounts.

How can you protect yourself? Don’t reply to calls, emails, or text messages that request personal information. Limit the personal information you share online. If possible, set up a PIN or password on your cellular account. Use stronger authentication measures such as complex passwords and two-factor authentication, if available on accounts that contain sensitive personal/financial information.
